Louis B. Sporleder, Sr., came West in the 1870's to the land of the Huajatolla (Spanish Peaks) and lived the life of a pioneer and explorer of our area.   His fascination and devotion to studying the great mountains produced insightful writings about his appreciation for this area of great beauty.  The following passage from his book, The Romance of the Spanish Peaks, lovingly describes his relationship with life and these mountains.
"To toil and to work forever, is not man's highest condition.  Even if it is now maintained that idleness is an evil, the day is not far distant when men will again deny this.  A future generation, with an advanced circle of ideas, will acknowledge that leisure, or the absence of the necessity to work for a whole lifetime, is a great good, a great blessing.  Some day men will work for the soul, more than they do now for bread.  And the time will come when all men will be free to enjoy this beautiful world.  Succeeding generations will be able to idle in the perfection of their physical frames, in the expansion of the mind, in the enlargement of the spirit, man will find his scope, his range of action.

Dike in Profile

Dike walls radiate out from the Spanish Peaks like spokes on a wheel, unique geologic formations formed from igneous molten rock spewed forth from volcanoes.  In this part of Colorado, we give them descriptive names, like The Devil's Stair steps and Profile Rock.
Eons ago, when the earth was new, the Devil was allowed out of his fiery home to survey the world. He chose the Cuchara Valley as his entrance. He would climb up the steps and sit on the twin mountains. Surveying the world, he plotted how to make it his. However, God learned of the Devil's plotting, and noticing the beauty of the mountains and the valley, God took it as his own. He forbade the Devil to enter the area again. But the Devil's steps still stand.

For one of Colorado's best scenic drives, take Highway 12 from La Veta to Trinidad.  You'll pass by the fabulous dike walls, see the mountain town of Cuchara and other historic towns, homesteads, mountain lakes and more!  Don't miss it!
